“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.” ~ Marcus Aurelius

I often think about my happiness.

How I create it for myself now and how much that has changed from years ago.

In my twenties and thirties I seemed to want so much.

A house. A car. A holiday.

Nothing could come too quickly.

I was never disappointed, but the anticipation always seemed to exceed the attainment.

Now I have a mortgage with that house.

Sometimes I have to adjust what I want in a car and a holiday because I have that mortgage.

Happiness is transient when we focus on ‘things.’

I try to choose happiness daily now in whatever situation.

Like today.

A day off with very few chores, the weather is nice enough to have the door open to my garden as the cat gently purrs happily next to me.

Tomorrow will be different, I have a job to get to, housework to be finished, emails to send and so on.

But I try to hold on to happiness, not in a memory of today. Of wishing I could have this everyday.

It’s a balance that runs through me.

A steadiness that is achieved through regular practice of meditation, quiet and kindness.

To myself and others.

Consciously going about each task and conversation with careful thought and consideration.

Trying to be –  as is written in The Four Agreements, ‘Impeccable with my word’ and ‘Always doing my best.’

With those ideals as a compass, I find a glow moment to moment throughout my day.

Brief flashes of clarity and synchronicity.

Snippets of joy in the mundane.

Happiness is a state of mind. Nothing brings it. You choose it.

I seem to always be hearing, “When I have this or that, I’ll feel better or be happier.”

I’ve said it.

But happiness is not external. It is within us all, if only we choose to seek it out. To practice it daily.

To stop and listen to ourselves quietly.

To do that, takes some work. Some conscious thought and regard for yourself or ‘self-care’ as I hear it branded.

That doesn’t mean sitting in a bath of bubbles with cold champagne!! Not everyday anyway.

It means taking some time out to silence your outer being. Your body.

Still and quieten your mind… feel the glow and warmth from inside.

For me it’s sitting outdoors, walking alone or meditating.

Committing to my own growth and expansion by quietly seeking solutions for the difficult situations that life often has to offer.

What is it for you?

What makes you feel sunny inside? Right in your gut.

What can you make better in your life by thinking more carefully?

By being kinder and attempting to see each person and situation with the love you would want for yourself?

Keep smiling.

Yours authentically

  1. Love this Em! For me it is connection, both to the earth and to myself. Experiencing nature, pulling a card, feeling gratitude for all that’s here already x

    1. I’m so pleased you enjoyed it. It is always the little things that make me smile the most. 😊😊😊
